Dressed modestly and with her hair tied back, we wonder if she’s been turned into a robot Stepford Wife. We needn’t have worried. Opening with the haunting ‘Down with Love’, Blasko’s husky voice glided over the audience like a lullaby, both soothing and spellbinding.
Showcasing songs solely from her critically acclaimed third album ‘As Day Follows Night’, Blasko provided the audience with a great mix of jazz tinged finger snapping numbers like ‘Bird On A Wire’ as well as poppier pieces like ‘Hold On My Heart’ and the understated ‘Sleeper Awake’.
Looking relaxed, her familiar quirky dance moves were transformed into more languid movements. It’s the first time we’ve seen her calm and at one with herself. There’s a certain confidence about her performance and less of the awkward, shy performer. This, she claims, is attributed to a recent holiday in India where she visited the Taj Mahal uncertain as to why she’s offering us this nugget of her personal life.
Like the little Aussie Battler she is, Blasko rolls up her sleeves and announces she’s to start a new album and gets stuck into slow burner ‘Night And Day’. Finishing the set in perfectly understated and haunting fashion, her transformation into sophisticated performer complete, we’re left with no doubt in our minds that she’ll be a Next Big Thing here. It just took a little time for people here to figure it out.
